Robotics company acquisition: what happens to the robot data
Updated
Years of episodes, telemetry and simulator runs are part of what a robotics company is worth. In an acquisition or a wind-down, the first question is which of them can be taken out of the platforms holding them.
Will the platform return the data?
Only a few say so. Universal Robots' data notice gives customers the right to access, retrieve and export all data generated by their robot; Foxglove makes data available for export if asked within 7 days of termination.

4 of 22 promise no export: Hugging Face deletes repository content within 90 days of cancellation and Unity may delete user content at once.

Are the episodes already being reused?
12 platforms keep aggregated or anonymised use, and an acquirer or buyer will want to know what those platforms already hold.

How large is the market for robots?
By A3's count cobots were 19.6% of the robots ordered in North America in 2025, and the International Federation of Robotics puts car plants at 40% of US industrial robot installations in 2024.

Who licenses a robotics company's data?
Data partners such as Defined.ai and Protege license from the companies that own data, and marketplaces such as Robotics Center take teleoperation demonstrations directly; see robot teleoperation data.
